4. The 'I Am' Mantra

In an episode of the Sundance Channel's Iconoclasts, Dr Deepak Chopra employs the TM technique to teach Mike Myers how to meditate using the words 'I am' as a mantra.

Dr Chopra was a student and friend of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He uses the same technique used by the Maharishi to share the 'I am' mantra with people attending his public appearances.

The idea behind using the words 'I am' is to remind us that when we make a statement beginning with the words 'I am...' we are usually talking about something we 'do' rather than what we 'are'.

What we truly 'are' transcends any label
of gender, race, nationality, or occupation,
and the 'I am' mantra
encourages us to rise above
the limitations implied by such labels.

'I am' is such a simple and elegant mantra, filled with deeper meaning but, as with all mantras, when you repeat it over and over it transcends all meaning and becomes just a sound.
